Girl Scout Troop 41592 – Quest Alumnae Earn the Silver Award
After spending extensive time researching and learning about the importance of Indoor Air Quality, the health effects of indoor pollutants and control strategies, Girls Scouts and Quest Academy Alumni, Madeline Chia, Madelyn Di Iorio, Kennedy Kirkland, Nicole Lee, Nicole Marceau, and Maya Mitckess have each earned the Silver Award, the second highest honor in Girl Scouts.
In particular, the Girl Scouts were interested in lung health and lung disease prevention including the effects and dangers of indoor contaminants such as Radon. It was shocking to learn that Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and is the second-leading cause of lung cancer overall.
Additionally, they studied indoor air quality for new construction, took air samples, reviewed lab results, and learned how everyday products pollute our living environment. They presented their individual findings to a group of 125 people including members of the American Lung Association, the Mayor of Inverness, and actress Mariel Hemingway at the grand opening of a national show house built using the newly revised American Lung Association Health House™ guidelines.
To complete the legacy portion of the Silver Award, these ambitious young ladies filmed a short video to serve as a Public Service Announcement and encourage individuals to test their homes for Radon. In June, the Girl Scouts were invited to the National Board Meeting of the American Lung Assoication where they were recognized for their work by Harold Wimmer, National President and CEO of the American Lung Association.
